My 8th graders will be completing their school year at home. They left for Spring Break only to be faced with uncertainties about returning to school, and a new way of schooling: online. For many of our students coming to school and seeing their friends’ and teachers’ faces was the one constant in their lives. They were assured that they were in a loving and safe environment.
Many of my students now feel alone and isolated and are struggling with distance/online learning.
I would like to send them a journal and writing utensils that would allow them to write and doodle.
At the end of the school year our students are celebrated with various activities before going off to high school.
My students are working very hard during this very trying time.
In addition to dealing with this pandemic, many are already faced with poverty, homelessness, and unemployment. They spend many hours on computers, and phones accessing the curriculum. Many are using shared devices with friends, siblings, and other family members. Our students are utilizing screen time in large quantities.
This project would allow me to infuse and connect their writing skills with real world experiences. They need forms of relaxation and time to focus on non-adult situations, and just being a kid.
A journal and pencils will be the tools that enable my students to write about their feelings, current events in their lives, and even compose poetry.
