Dissect It!

My students need the experience of bringing the ecosystem to our classroom. I have used owl pellets and dissected sharks in the past with my upper elementary students.

My Students

If you were to walk into my classroom, you would see a hands-on, child-centered room, full of excitement. My students are amazing. We are a small community, with farm families to suburban student transfers. We come with a vast variety of experiences to share.

In my classroom, we always say,"We are a family." We spend the year sharing and caring for one another.

My classroom is a safe and fun environment where we take care of one another. I want to provide my students with as many experiences as they can have before they leave my classroom that will enrich their learning. My hope is that I spur their interests and inspire them to be all they can be. My job is to prepare them and solidify the building blocks for the following years of schooling. I hope they will take a nugget of their learning from my room with them all the days of their life.

My Project

Students need to see how the environment effects animals around us. By looking into what they eat and how they are made through dissection, this allows students a rare opportunity that they may not ever experience. They are able to see how the organs are attached and function to make an animal live.

The owl pellets are wonderful in showing students how animals can't use everything they eat.

It also shows how they dispose of those things. We will identify the bones and then try to piece the bones back together to create and predict the animal the owl consumed.
