This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a speech-language pathologist in an educational setting in New Jersey. Most of my caseload is made up of students from preschool through fourth grade. I would estimate that eighty percent of my caseload is preschoolers/elementary students with special needs. Their degree of severity is from mild to severe, and some are nonverbal. All have difficulties and/or delays with receptive and expressive language, social skills, pragmatics, and articulation.

My students are very motivated with the use of technology.

Now I want to help them find new motivation through traditional games similar to the ones I grew up with.

My Project

We were lucky enough to get some really amazing games for speech and language therapy donated through Donors Choose! However, now I would like to organize and display the games in a way that will encourage students to get excited, create conversations, and provide communication opportunities. Scanning, making choices, requesting, and being able to communicate their wants/needs are part of the students' goals for language development.

Having bookshelves so that they can visually see games can also elicit communication by presenting desired items out of reach so they will see them and have to use language to communicate.

This would be great a way to display the wonderful games we have received so far and create excitement in attending speech and language therapy.
