I teach STEAM electives to middle schoolers in an under-resourced and underfunded school which also boasts a free and/or reduced-price lunch participation of 100%. My school's population is very diverse, a mini-United Nations of sorts, with students hailing from many countries and speaking a variety of different languages. What they all share is a thirst for learning about technology.
My students are amazingly diverse, hard-working, and enthusiastic about learning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).
The kids have many obstacles that they face in their daily lives, but once they enter my class, they are spirited, driven, and ready to wow me with their curiosity and ingenuity. They constantly impress me with their creativity and talents!
Through someone else's generosity, my first trip to Disneyland happened for me when I was an adult in college. I had never been there in my youth because like the students that I teach, I grew up in poverty. My parents had to raise many children and taking a family vacation to Disneyland was a luxury that they could not afford.
I still remember the wonder, awe, glee, and thrill from my time at the "happiest place on earth" and it has left lasting memories.
That experience changed me forever and I want to spread the joy to my deserving students, all of whom are hard-working, and most of whom have never even ventured outside of their neighborhoods.
I have high expectations of my students and want to provide them with a reward field trip that shows them that when you work hard to achieve your dreams, the payoff is worthwhile. This field trip would be the icing on the cake on a productive year. Students will have to meet rigorous academic and behavioral goals in order to participate.
I can't wait to share the news with the students that strangers around the world banded together so that their wildest dreams could become a reality. Thank you for your consideration in making my students' dreams come true.
