Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are excited to come to the STEM classroom, because they are always hopeful they will get to design and build something.
In our district there are schools that are designated STEM Academies.
We are not a STEM Academy School, but we still try to offer a STEM program. All the 6th graders and the 7th/8th SDC students get to come to an environmental STEM class for a quarter. This class is only time in the year that these students get to have a chance to do some hands-on activities that apply science concepts through engineering design.
My Project
With these materials students will get a chance to design and build solar heaters. The students will be challenged to build the solar heater that heats the water to the highest temperature in a designated amount of time. The students will first have to learn how different solar thermal technologies work. They will need to understand concepts associated with heat transfer. Once they have a basic knowledge they will be challenged to design and build a solar heater using a set amount of plastic tubing, and any other materials (cardboard, construction paper, black or white spray paint, tape, glue, etc.) that we can get our hands on.
Let the students' imaginations loose.
Give them some knowledge and then challenge them to apply that knowledge. These are the kinds of lessons and activities that students remember year after year.
