My students need butterflies and lady beetles and food for both. They also need well-written, interesting books to build their knowledge of these insects.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When you give a class some caterpillars, students become scientists. They observe, analyze, and hypothesize. They work together with classmates to study the life cycles and structures of these living creatures. They freely share their knowledge. But first they need the caterpillars.
I teach a very diverse group of second and third graders.
Fourteen of my twenty-six students are Latino, nine are African American, and three are Asian. Eleven of my students are English learners. Most of my students come from working class families. My students' families are highly interested and involved in their children's education. As a school community, however, we need assistance to obtain materials to enrich student learning.
My Project
The butterflies, lady beetles, and insect food I am requesting are for a hands-on environmental and life science unit. My students will raise and care for the Painted Lady butterflies and lady beetles. As they do so, they will observe, record, discuss, write, and hypothesize about their life cycles and the form and function of these insects' body structures. Then before releasing them into our school's garden, they will consider, explore, and research the effect that butterflies and lady beetles have on the environment and how the environment might affect them. To culminate our unit, I will challenge my students to use their creativity to showcase what they have learned about these amazing insects and their impact on the environment.
The books will provide my students with background knowledge of the insects they will be working with.
The insects and books I am asking for will enrich my students' learning tremendously.
They will allow my students to combine the excitement of hands-on scientific observation with the art of writing, creating, and sharing the knowledge they have gained. This project has one additional benefit. The butterflies and lady beetles we release into our school garden will help with the pollination of our garden's plants and reduction of pests that harm those plants, like aphids.
Thanks in advance!
