This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When was the last time you had to complete a project for work while sharing your computer with one or two other people? For most adults the answer is never. With only 11 iPad 2s in our classroom, my students have to share. But with one more iPad, they will at least be able to work in groups of two.

I teach a diverse group of students.

Sixteen are Latino, four are African American, and three are Asian/Pacific Islander. Six of them are English learners. My school is a high poverty school and all of my students receive either free or reduced meals. They are a bright and eager group who thrive with the help of technology. Because many of them come from families who cannot afford to provide them with cutting edge technology to enhance their learning at home, it is my goal to do so while they are in my classroom.

My Project

I am requesting an iPad with Retina Display because I envision teaching in a classroom where every student has one of these wonderful devices with which to learn. Thanks to a grant written by our principal, my classroom has 11 iPad 2s. A twelfth iPad will bring us closer to my vision. It will allow my students to work in groups of two during our upcoming environmental science unit. During this unit, my students will raise and care for Painted Lady butterflies and lady beetles. They will use the iPads to create a digital journal of their learning using apps like Pages and iMovie. They will observe, photograph, take notes, discuss, and hypothesize about the form and function of these insects' body structures. They will also use the iPads to research the effect that butterflies and ladybugs have on the environment and how the environment might affect them. Then they will release them into our community garden to help pollinate and protect the plants they and school mates have planted

The iPad with Retina Display that I hope Disney will help fund will bring our classroom closer to the one computer per student vision I have.

It will allow my students to combine the excitement of scientific observation with the art of writing. Finally, it will allow my students to engage in a hands-on project that will benefit our school's community garden and local environment.
