Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

85% of my students qualify for free lunch at the Title I school that I teach at. Many of my students live in hotels and do not have access to permanent housing. They are dealing with obstacles that no child should ever have to face, yet they come to school eager to learn and succeed in life.

Music, for many of them, is their outlet for expressing their feelings, giving a sense of accomplishment, and teaching them self-discipline.

The students view their instruments as precious resources that give them hope for a better future. My students work hard in music and seeing the look on their faces at performances makes it all worth it!

I have the honor of teaching students from​ diverse backgrounds and cultures. Teaching them the joys of music and introducing them to music genres that they have never experienced is the highlight of my job. My students also look to me for guidance in their life. I've been blessed to help many of them attend our county Arts school and continue to pursue music. Creating life-long supporters of the arts is important to me.

My Project

I work at a Title I school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students struggle with poverty, proper housing, and other life essentials. Most of my students have never seen a professional musical, much less performed in one! I am so blessed and excited that our school was one of 5 schools chosen out of 37 schools in the Central Florida area to participate in the Disney Musicals in Schools Program through the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center.

After attending the Disney Musicals in Schools Orientation last week, we have decided to present "The Lion King" because we believe this musical best highlights the wonderful diversity of our school!

As a performer, I know the wonderful bonding and family atmosphere that occurs when putting together a production of this magnitude. We are even more excited that our school's production of "The Lion King" will culminate with a performance in the Walt Disney Theater at the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center in addition to the three performances we plan to present at our school campus in May of 2020! I can hardly wait to see my students perform and witness the magic they will experience!
