Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are looking forward to participating in Disney’s Planet Challenge this year! Our project for this year will have two parts: 1) paper conservation and 2) plastic bottle recycling.

I teach 50 rambunctious 6th graders in a title 1 inner city school.

100% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and we have a homeless population much higher than the city average for public school. We also have a very high incidence of asthma, which causes many students to miss several days of school each year. For the Disney Challenge, we would like to make collect plastic bottles (water bottles, milk cartons, etc) that people would otherwise be throwing away. We would like to turn these plastic bottles into bird feeders and install the feeders in areas throughout the city. Every week, students will measure the amount of seed left in each feeder to see the areas in the city that are most heavily populated with wildlife. This information will help to inform our conjecture about bird migration patterns and seasonal changes.

We are requesting two net books for data collection and sets of measuring cups for each of the individual teams.

We are very excited to start this project and look forward to exploring the environment before the seasons change.

Thanks so much for supporting our efforts to learn about the environment!
