As a Physical Education teacher in a low-income/high poverty/overcrowded school in N.Y.C, my students face many challenges in school and out of school. Although they face many challenges, I am looking forward to providing my students with innovative and life-changing experiences. My students are curious, creative and love to learn.
Many of my students are of various ethnic backgrounds and are being raised in non-English speaking homes.
Most of my students live in small apartments with two working parents.
The majority of my students are in after-school programs until 7 p.m., which does not allow time for outdoor play. This contributes to obesity and they are not able to get the recommended 60 minutes a day of activity. The little bit of exercise they receive once or twice a week from Physical Education is in many cases all they get.
My students love Physical Education because it is a time to be active and socialize with their classmates.
My Project
My students need disinfecting wipes to keep our equipment clean and germ-free.
As part of the school supply list, students are asked to bring in disinfecting wipes.
Many of the students' parents had to choose which items on the supply list was important to purchase first. We have 3 months of school left and our disinfecting wipes are all wiped out. I have asked students to bring in more, but their families live on a tight budget.
We would appreciate a supply of disinfecting wipes because germs travel fast and flu season is not over.
My students and I appreciate any donation made to our disinfecting wipes project.
