Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and speak a variety of languages such as Spanish, Khmer, and Vietnamese at home. They live in a poverty-stricken neighborhood with a high crime rate. Some of my students are homeless. Despite their many challenges, they are students who are motivated to learn. School is a safe place for them. They enjoy learning the most when they are able to have hands-on opportunities to learn. Many of our students dream of being the first in their family to go to college.

My Project

This project will pay for an instructor and design and equip my students with LEGO parts in activities. The project is designed to provide my class parents to connect with their students and my class families to connect with each other at a number of community events. The parts will first be used by the instructor and again at other school events.

My students will use these parts as they learn to create art (mosaics), create and solve math problems, and build a representation of Shoreline Village (a picturesque shopping center in Long Beach) in the mini-modular LEGO building style.

We will create and document the learning opportunities the students design for easy sharing, and implement a learn to share and teach approach. Then we will create opportunities for the students to share their accomplishments in play, art and math.

This will give them a sense of pride in having a very special skill to share with others.

The LEGO medium will engage them in play. We will leverage that engagement to create a passion for learning with the students. If this project is successfully funded, we will have the equipment needed to replicate our program.

The projects will be co-presented by the students and parents at special community events.
