My students live on and island and go to the beach often yet very few of them really know the contents of the sands that they visit. We also have a sand collection of over 100 sand samples from all over the world that we learn about as well.
KHS is a fully operational public high school with a current population of 872 students and 82 faculty members.
The ethnic make up of KHS is diverse; the four predominant groups are Part Hawaiian, Filipino, Caucasian, and Asian. The general socioeconomic status of the community drops below the indicators found throughout Hawai’i with the median household income being $32,334. In comparison with the rest of the state, our community has a lower percentage of the population both without a high school degree and without a college degree. Sixty-five percent of our student population receives free or reduced lunch.
My Project
With the microscope camera and supporting books, students will better understand the composition of different sand types, particle sizes and sand sorting that creates different coast lines where they live and all over the world. Students will be able to have a closer look at the different sand samples and be able to identify their contents. Because we live so far away from other coastlines, our students rarely get the opportunity to discover sands from beaches far away. We have been developing a sand sample collection of over 100 sands from around the world. With the requested supplies, students will be able to discover and analyze the components of beaches found in their community as well as those found in far away lands.
We are very limited with all of the budget cuts that our school is experiencing.
This new tool will actively engage students in their learning. Students are very excited with the large sand collection that we have. These tools will enable students to grasp what the sand really is.
