Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are looking forward to participating in DisneyÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂs Planet Challenge this year! Our project for this year will have two parts: 1) paper conservation and 2) plastic bottle recycling.
I teach 50 rambunctious 6th graders in a title 1 inner city school.
100% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and we have a homeless population much higher than the city average for public school. We also have a very high incidence of asthma, which causes many students to miss several days of school each year.
For the Disney Challenge, we would like to collect plastic bottles (water bottles, milk cartons, etc) that people would otherwise be throwing away. We would like to turn these plastic bottles into bird feeders and install the feeders in areas throughout the city. Every week, students will measure the amount of seed left in each feeder to see the areas in the city that are most heavily populated with wildlife. This information will help to inform our conjecture about bird migration patterns and seasonal changes.
My Project
As a part of our project, we would like to minimize the amount of paper used in class. We are requesting a net book computer to use to collect the data that we will be recording from the bird feeders. We are also requesting USB drives so that each student will have one and will be able to work on their report at home or at the public library. We will use these computers both for keeping spreadsheets of our bird seed data and for word processing so that less paper can be used. Students can submit their assignments electronically, eliminating the need for paper all together. The computers are also small enough to travel out into the field to the various feeder sites.
We are very excited to start this project and look forward to exploring the environment before the seasons change.
Thanks so much for supporting our efforts to learn about the environment!
