My Students
I teach in a Title 1 school where most of the students come from low-income families. English is not my students’ first language. My class is filled with 9 energetic students who love to learn. They all have different kinds of special needs, such as autism, intellectual disabilities, and speech and language impairments. I have 5 Fifth Graders and 4 Fourth Graders.
My students work hard, and they do not let their special needs prevent them from accomplishing every performance task.
They are always helpful, sweet and hard-working. They like to read, and always can't wait to read during the reading workshop.
My Project
The coming unit of our Fourth Grade curriculum is to teach the structure of nonfiction texts and how students connect themselves to the nonfiction texts.
In the coming unit, my bilingual special education students will study nonfiction resources and research on different kinds of extreme weather, such as hurricanes and tornadoes.
My students need lots of books in lower levels, so they can read across topics and become more critical and expert on various topics.
These books will allow my students to expose themselves to new things, like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and other extreme weather conditions. Exploration first begins from reading and understanding.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
