This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine a color you've never seen before. Pretty difficult, right? That's the challenge my students face every day when they are asked to conceptualize abstract scientific structures without the use of basic scientific technology.
Science can be the most engaging experience of a young student's academic life.
However, without the technology and resources required to complete hands on activities, these students will never experience this thrill.
My students are Seniors at a small charter high school in California. Our students come from some of the most violent and dangerous neighborhoods within our city. However, even the most trying situations cannot deter them from getting to school on a daily basis. It's not rare for one of our students to leave home at 5:30 to trek through gang territories and drug dealers just to reach school. It is this resolve that makes our school so special.
Currently, we are one of the top performing high schools in California, achieving higher state test scores than many of the wealthier, larger public schools in the area. My seniors are special. Not only are 100% of my seniors applying to colleges and universities this fall, but 100% of them plan on attending college next year.
My Project
I currently teach 12th grade Human Biology, a class meant to prepare seniors for the rigor of college level science courses and majors. Unfortunately, my school's financial situation limits the amount of technology available in my classroom. In turn, students don't have an opportunity to complete labs that will both prepare them for college science and allow them to interact with the material they are learning.
My students struggle to understand topics and concepts they can't see or interact with. The hands on activities made available by microscopes will open up a wealth of opportunities for my students. Microscope laboratories will allow students to observe the inner workings of cells, tissue, bacteria, etc. Through these experiences, students will be able to discuss, analyze, and create questions about the material covered in my class. The critical thinking skills involved with these labs will significantly improve my students' scientific understanding and prepare them for college.
My students deserve more than they have.
As a college student, I was fully set on becoming a doctor. However, after spending just one year with these students, I have placed my medical plans on the back burner. My students have taught me more in the last year than I could ever dream of teaching them. By funding this project, you will be giving my students a hands on scientific experience that will provide them a chance of reaching their goals and attaining the life they so definitely deserve.
