Discovering STEM Through Fairy Tales

My students need a Fairy Tales Problem Solving STEM Kit to learn about STEM projects and what better way to learn, then through beloved fairy tales that they know by heart.

My Students

I am a Basic Skills Instructor this year, where I work with various grade levels and help kids grasp concepts in small groups. My students range from six years old to nine years old. I teach in various classroom throughout the day and I want to help students grasp concepts that they are struggling to grasp in a large group setting.

My students are hard workers, who may just need additional help in a small setting, to grasp the concepts taught in class.

They love to learn and are enthusiastic with their successes. They are bright, kind and energetic. They love learning hands on and discovering new things!

My Project

My students all know the stories about the three little pigs, goats and bears, but can you imagine extending the stories so they can use their engineering skills to solve various tasks? How exciting would it be for the students to read various fairy tales then have a task to solve within that story that could change the ending in that story! For example, we all know that Goldilocks breaks baby bears chair, but what is the children needed to create a chair that she can't break? What if they design a house that the big bad wolf can not huff and puff and blow down? What if they can create a bridge which will keep the three little goats safe from that mean old troll? Can you imagine the excitement of the trial and errors and they recreate the ending of these beloved fairy tales, then share their findings with their classmates? I can just hear the excitement!
