My students are curious, brave, and creative in their determination to become better readers and mathematicians! They struggle to find activities that grab their interests. After several tries I have found that my students love to participate in hands on activities! However, I do not have enough activities to provide them and follow the proper cleaning and sanitation procedures due to COVID-19. My school is a low income, Title I school, surrounded by an impoverished neighborhood. Though this should discourage my students, it motivates them to come to school and grow in their math as much as they can!
My Project
Over half of my students are struggling with the understanding of Place Value. This is the foundations of Mathematics! If my students cannot understand how numbers work, then they will continue to fall behind in their 4th grade math class! By using these activities, students will be able to physically manipulate numbers and understand how place value works! They will be able to read and write the numbers they have created which will give them the complete picture of place value! Through these activities, students will gain the confidence that they have lost due to COVID-19!
