I am a third grade teacher at PS 169 in Brooklyn, New York. I work at a Title I school where 93 percent of the children receive free breakfast and lunch every day. Many of my students are English Language Learners, and their parents are immigrants who do not know the language. Therefore, it is very difficult for the children to receive help with their schoolwork at home. Since most of the children are English Language Learners, it is imperative to use hands-on manipulatives to help them understand most of the concepts being taught. In most subjects, hands-on materials are available, especially in math. One of the most difficult math topics for children to comprehend is geometry. I teach third grade, and geometry is introduced and expanded upon during this year. In order for my students to acquire the knowledge they need in this area, it would be very helpful if I can provide them with a variety of geometry activities and manipulatives to assist them. Every day there is an allotted time for math games and hand-on activities. We call this time of the day Special Time. The children absolutely love it because they have a lot of fun and it breaks up the monotony of the day. These geometry activities would be put to good use during this time and the children would love it and learn at the same time. Lakeshore Learning is offering a variety of geometry games and activities that we would love to have in our classroom. I thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
