My Students
My goal is to foster a natural desire to read in my students. It is my desire that through this high interest novel my students will find their undiscovered passion for books. The book room at my school, does not offer texts that interest, challenge, or culturally support my 21st century students.
My students are rural, with low socioeconomic statuses who have a high intelligence with minimal work ethic.
Their work ethic is uncultivated. At my school we have many initiatives but we have yet to find the formula to success. My principal and administrative team are huge supporters of literacy but there are not any funds to support and enhance our current book room.
My Project
The students will conduct a novel unit study, The Hunger Games, that encompasses many of the common core strands for 9th grade. Many of the activities are among the higher levels of engagement to foster students natural desire to not only learn but read for enjoyment. Students will use technology to support and publish their rhetoric projects based on concepts from the novel. Students are asked to reflect on themes in the novel and use their ideas to complete a community outreach project.
My students will be exposed to the social hierarchy beyond these classroom walls.
The students will develop an understanding of not just literary skills but of the evolution of people throughout time, by studying the unspoken cast system that thrives in modern day America. I challenge my students to create ads to gather materials for community groups in need. Just like Katniss and Peeta need tools to survive, there a community based groups who require materials to flourish.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
