Help me give my students biotechnology reagents and materials to allow them hands-on professional experience with learning how to detect sickle cell disease and solve a forensics case using PCR and gel electrophoresis!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 11th grade biology and environmental science in a public project based learning (PBL) high school. My scientists tackle real world problems with their curiosity, innovation, and integration of current science and technology in our classroom and in the community. Our classroom reflects the rich and diverse culture of the San Diego region from all socioeconomic backgrounds. All of our students at our school benefit from a full inclusion IEP education to access a university level STEAM curriculum.
Our school believes that 100% of students deserve an opportunity to continue in higher education after graduation and excel in their gifts and talents.
My student scientists use STEAM as a way to explore their interests, investigate their ideas, and design new solutions. My students use their varying backgrounds, languages, and experiences to work together to create an inclusive, forward-thinking team that utilizes biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, ecology, astrobiology, botany, and engineering to design and conduct experiments for the International Space Station. These experiences bring my scientists together in a positive, rigorous learning environment while also preparing them for future STEAM majors and careers.
My Project
With your generous donation, our 11th grade scientists will be able to learn about how DNA is used to help uncover and cure diseases, see your family's genetic history, and help solve a wrongfully convicted criminal case. They will be able to use professional biotechnology equipment such as micropipettes, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencers to conduct their sickle cell and forensics investigations.
With the experience from these learning labs, our ultimate goal is for each student to create their own DNA research question and experiment with the help of their peers and their scientist mentors from UC San Diego, the Salk Institute, and Illumina with the reagents and materials provided with your help!
