Discovering Authors and Book Series

My students need 2 - 8 copies of 37 books from popular authors and book series such as Sharon Creech and The Spiderwick Chronicles.

I am a third grade teacher of students who reside primarily in military housing. Many of the families are struggling with financial issues as well as the military deployment of parents. School supplies, especially quality chapter books, are limited.

My goal is to bring out 'the reader' in each of these special students. How is a love of reading fostered? By discovering engaging book series and authors. I currently read aloud to my students and they are truly absorbed listeners during this anticipated part of the school day. Reading aloud to students exposes them to quality books, and I would like to be able to offer students sequels or books by the same author to read independently or in their reading clubs. Unfortunately my supply off engaging, high interest books is limited.

You can help my students develop a love of reading by providing the books I have carefully selected. These books have proved to be very popular with my students. The students will have the opportunity to read these wonderful books with their book club groups and independently. They will be given the chance to discuss their books with one another and they will learn the enjoyment and excitement that reading brings. They will also become more capable and confident readers which is basic to school success and will improve their opportunities in the future.
