My Project
My students love the tactile feeling of 3-D art.
Whenever new material is put on their desks, students instinctively reach for it and explore it with their hands.
Give them playdough or Model Magic and their faces light up!
These malleable materials give students a chance to explore and shape their art. Students take modeling materials and roll, pat, flatten, squeeze, poke, cut, pinch and manipulate! While they investigate all the things they can do, they are building strength in their fingers and developing fine motor skills with their hands. This helps with their writing and cutting skills. These building materials are like fertilizers to their imagination. The more they manipulate them the more they ponder and wonder, what else can I do?
My Kindergarteners will choose objects to make a plaster casting. I can already see their fingers running along the impressions that their forms created. First graders will roll and squeeze clay into unique little animals. Second graders will get messy with papier mache as they transform recycled material into something wonderful.
Much like the squishy stress ball or other objects that are stress relievers, squeezing and manipulating playdough is great for helping calm down kids. They are relaxing and focusing on the project at hand, sharing ideas with their tablemates and expressing their emotions about what they are seeing and doing. It’s absolutely magic!
