Discover the Outer and Inner You! Self Portrait Identity Boxes
Help me give my students the supplies needed to explore their physical outer identity and discover their inner identity and use images and objects to represent those identities by creating identity boxes.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
People’s identities are made up of internal and external selves. The external self is what others see; the internal self is what we know to be true about ourselves.
My students will explore how others see them (their outer self) and how they see themselves (their internal self).
They will also use objects and images/symbols to symbolize their external and internal self. The finished product will be an identity box.
Students will use the art supplies listed to create their identity boxes and then use the podium to present their finished product. Middle school is all about discovering who you are and I want to give my students the opportunity to really think about how they want the world and others to see them. What kind of human being do they want the world to see? It will be a perfect project as they end 8th grade and get ready for high school.
