My students need more African American novel sets such as "Small Steps", "One Crazy Summer", "Wonder", and "Mr. Terupt Falls Again". The majority of my students are non-white and I want them to be able to relate to the books that we will be reading.
I love to read. I want my students to love to read. Well I need help! My own personal library is scarce and I need more Multicultural novels. I want my students to be able to pick out a book and never want to put it down. We will be running small literary circles this year with plenty of discussions
I will be co-teaching a group of 5/6 graders.
I am a special education teacher that will be team teaching with a general education teacher all day. All our students are at risk students. Our drop-out rate is climbing to an all time high because our students can not read or write. Our state test scores are one of the lowest in the county and I want to be able to do something about it. I want my students to learn to love to read as much as I do.
My Project
My students need more African American novels such as Small Steps, One Crazy Summer, Wonder, and Mr. Terupt Falls Again. The majority of my students are non-white and I want them to be able to relate to the books that we will be reading. I want my students to have a choice in what they are reading and right now my library is scarce. I need more books to connect with my African American students. I want them to be able to connect and engage in a novel. in order for this to happen they need to be able to read about characters that are like them--that talk like them, that look like them, that are going through the same thing they are going through!
I want my students to be able to say after they read one of my novels, "Wow that was a great book!
Do you have another like the last one I read?" I want to be able to say, "YES!" I usually buy most, if not all of my classroom supplies and I buy food for my kids because the majority of them come in hungry--so any amount to help so I can get these novels would be greatly appreciated!
