My Students

My students want what we all do--a safe home, good friends, good health, opportunities to learn and grow, and the chance to make a difference in the world. They come to me from over twenty countries, speaking a dozen languages. New to the country, the culture, and rigors of high school, my students deal with a lot. One thing they shouldn’t have to deal with is a messy science lab. It's the stuff we all deal with plus what doing science with 75 students a day brings: Dust, bits of paper, pencil shavings, tracked in dirt, or soil from our classroom plantings. We need a way to keep clean along the way because we can't wait until the custodian swings through at night.

My Project

I'm asking for a vacuum cleaner that we can use everyday to tidy up and keep messes to a minimum. Keeping their workspaces and floors clean is one of the jobs students are given in my classroom. While this often involves a broom and a dustpan, there are frequently messes that require a bit more horsepower - soil spilled onto the floor, dust hiding in a corner, in the computer cart and bookshelves, or under the radiators where dust seems to accumulate most before it’s blown around by the heat.

A powerful but maneuverable vacuum will let us pick up big messes quickly, and get into the nooks where dirt and dust tend to persist.

A clean classroom impacts so many facets of students’ learning experience. A clean workspace makes it easier to be creative and focused. Keeping down dust keeps students’ healthier, cutting down on the number of days they are absent or not feeling well. The responsibility to keep their space clean teaches a lifelong responsibility that makes students better stewards of their environment. Providing them this tool to keep things clean sends the message that I want to support them in this responsibility. Please send us a vacuum to keep our class clean!
