Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My elementary students have many interests that they want to read more about. One of those interests is dinosaurs. The collection of dinosaur books in the school library needs to be updated. My state has yet to pass a budget which currently means no money to buy books at the district level.
High interest children's books keep kids reading and that is a beautiful thing!
The elementary school where I am the librarian is in a high-crime, high-poverty area. It is an urban school district in Pennsylvania with close to 100% free and reduced price lunch. We strive to make our school the best place for our students, a place of joy, relaxation, comfort, and of course, the best learning around.
My Project
This project requests copies of Triceratops, Diplodocus, Velociraptor, The Magic School Bus in The Time Of The Dinosaurs, Dinosaur!, Dinosaurs!, Tyrannosaurus Rex, national Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Dinosaurs, Dinosaur A-Z, and the Little Paleontologist series.
My students will be able to check these books out of the school library. Having high-interest new books make children excited to come to the library, and provides them with more reasons to read. Our school uses a literacy process called The Daily 5 which gives students daily reading time by themselves or with a partner. The children will use these books during this literacy time.
Being able to provide these dinosaur books for my students will allow them to improve their independent reading levels while learning about these animals.
These books will engage them and increase their excitement for the printed word.
