I have the pleasure of having such an amazing and diverse group of students. My students have been placed in a self-contained classroom for students labeled as having multiple disabilities. My students have disabilities that range from intellectual to physical disabilities, to other health impairments.
Some of the students require intensive, individualized, and frequent instruction to allow them to be as functional and independent within the community.
Some skills that are of the utmost importance are communication skills (having their own communication system), basic math skills (like number recognition), and basic literacy skills (like identifying letters or their names).
Most importantly, despite disabilities and being in a low-income area, they are great students. They are crazy, fun-loving, determined, and bright young minds. They make my day interesting and not one single day is the same. That's the life of a special education classroom, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
My Project
Science is hard to teach without hands on activities. I'm doing a unit on making observations & identifying characteristics. I utilize the dinosaurs for this science/observation unit, but I also heavily incorporate core vocabulary words like LOOK, SAME, and DIFFERENT so the students are still getting literacy within our science lessons.
I want all my students to have their own sets of dinosaurs - to learn at school and at home!
It's my hope that each student will have a set of dinosaurs to feel and look at. My kiddos really need to have tactile/object representation, so this will be a great supplement to this unit!
Plus, the kids get to keep them as toys & get a fun dinosaur book to take home!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
