This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are curious, passionate, dedicated learners in the 3rd grade. Our academy's goal is to provide a safe and emotionally secure learning environment. In addition, we focus on real-world skills, problem solving, and how to be a good citizen.
My scholars have a ton of potential; my goal is to help them realize this potential by cultivating academic excellence and recognizing their individual strengths.
They are a creative and innovative group. With the right tools, the sky is truly the limit!
My Project
I strive to create an inclusive, welcoming, sensory-friendly classroom that is accessible for all students. To help achieve this goal, I would like to place calming blue light filters over our harsh fluorescent lights. Research has shown that fluorescent lights can cause headaches/ migraines, and can prevent students from staying focused on their learning.
These light filters are specially designed to reduce the harsh glare and 'flicker' of traditional fluorescent lights.
They are heat-resistant and fire marshal approved. Our classroom currently has a couple of these filters on the lights at the front of the room, and I hope to be able to place filters over every light. This will help increase student focus, decrease eye strain, and prevent headaches and migraines.
When we aren't using the overhead (fluorescent) lights, we have several lamps located around the room. These give us another option for soft lighting and, like the filters, help create a more welcoming and sensory-friendly environment. In this project, I have also asked for bulbs for our existing lamps, to replace those that have burned out.
