John Ruskin said, "The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it." My students strive towards this every day as they become contributing members of society.
My students are in kindergarten through fifth grade classes for students with significant disabilities.
They attend a public elementary school with their neighborhood peers. Their differing abilities include: Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, Angelman Syndrome, Epilepsy, visual impairments, and hearing impairments. Many have parents currently serving in the U.S. Military.
My Project
With the help of our peer partners, we would like to take the leftover fruits and vegetables from our lunches and leaves from our school yard and compost them for our school garden. The drip hoses will help keep our vegetables and flowers watered. Our 30 raised beds in the garden provide us with hands-on environmental learning opportunities every week. The birds, bees, and butterflies like the flowers we plant and the students enjoy the creative recipes they make with the freshly harvested vegetables.
These hands-on gardening materials will help our students continue to learn about healthy balanced nutrition, life science, and environmental science.
We hope it will help them make healthy choices in the future.
