This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Ughhhh, Ms. T, this iPad doesn't work." These words are all too common when the iPad cart rolls into our classroom. My first graders are eager to learn, eager to please, and especially eager to explore the digital world. At 6 years old, they want to laugh, tell stories and share all that they know.
My students are hardworking first graders that attend a Title I school in Brooklyn, New York.
These growing readers, writers, mathematicians, artists and scientists have a wonderfully diverse set of backgrounds, speak a variety of languages and have varying access to resources. Their enthusiasm is contagious and charm endearing. These sweet, kind, and compassionate children deserve regular opportunities to expand their mind using various medias.
My Project
When teaching first graders, engagement is key. Students' needs must be targeted and their interests must be incorporated. One way to do this is through center-based learning. In our classroom, we have both literacy centers and math centers. Students have distinct groups for each and rotate through carefully selected activities.
iPads and Osmo would revolutionize centers in our classroom.
With the iPads from this project, we would have 4 in the classroom. This would allow us to have one iPad-based center, in which students could use RazKids (literacy) or STMath, BigBrainz (math). These programs, beloved by students, meet each one at their level and provide them with guided practice they need to succeed. Adding Osmo to our repertoire with the Genius Kit would provide additional opportunities for students to grapple with phonemic awareness, spatial reasoning, coding and numerical fluency. A document camera is useful for projecting the daily center's schedule, as well as displaying high-quality work completed during this time. These students come in everyday wanting nothing more than to learn. I want nothing more than to be able to make that happen everyday.
More than half of students from low‑income households
