I believe that voice and communication are the most empowering tools a child can learn. These are skills that are even more necessary in an inner-city environment, like Calvin Simmons Middle School in East Oakland, where many of the students lack the money and support to empower themselves through other means. Each year, at the end of the year, I do a poetry unit that culminates in a poetry reading by the kids, representing their best work. This project has resulted in the students gaining confidence with expression and communication, and I've had students return to tell me how glad they were to have participated in the event. Parents who have attended the event agree. After the first year of poetry performances, I began collecting student poetry to use as examples, which had the effect of boosting the quality of work of each subsequent class. The students were able to read their peers' poetry and thus had a reference to strive for, and the work reflected this greatly. I am asking for a digital video camera to record the poetry performances of the students in this project. This will serve two functions: first, the students will be able to keep a copy of their own performance, and second, it will provide a visual record for future classes to see, critique, and out-perform.
