Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from across the globe and face enormous challenges. We are a high poverty school and my students come from many backgrounds. Many are English learners and speak Spanish, Korean, Bengali, Tagalog, Russian, and more as their first language.

My students are a bright, motivated and incredibly diverse group of middle school students.

I am inspired by their hard work and dedication to learning. In the face of challenges, they are very resilient.

As a language arts teacher, I want to bring my love of literature, writing and character development to my students as they navigate growing up in Los Angeles.

My Project

My students are enthusiastic learners. We love to share ideas and collaborate. I want to ensure that every study is able to use the technology available to us. Teaching students digital skills will help them this year and in the future as we are increasingly living in a digital age.

This iPad will help students will be more engaged with the lesson and will not feel left out because they don’t have a device.

Currently, our school is endeavoring to provide students with one to one iPad integration. However, students may not have an iPad because they may have a broken or dysfunctional device, or any variety of reasons. We do not have enough loaner devices for all the students who may be without a device. There are less than 20 available loaner devices and over 1,600 students! My students will feel left out of the lesson for these factors. I want to provide enough devices for students without one so that each student is able to fully participate in each lesson.

I strive to make my lessons as engaging as possible. I use several platforms that give students a chance to share ideas, ask and answer questions, review material and test understanding. Students participate in games, quizzes, and more using iPads. I am also teaching Google Digital Skills as part of our curriculum. If a student does not have an iPad for any variety of reasons, they will feel left out of our lesson. I always tell them they can submit their answers on paper rather than digitally, but I see the look of disappointment and know that is not the same. I aim to provide students who are without a device with one so they can be fully part of the lesson.
