My Students

Our school is the alternative high school for at-risk adolescents in Dekalb County Illinois. We service students from 9 different school districts within the county. For many of our students school has not been a positive or even a continuous experience. By providing smaller class sizes and more individualized attention we can offer a second chance for these students to graduate from high school.

Our school is grant funded.

Often science supplies are not only expensive, but not always within our budget to obtain. I am passionate about building a true science program that incorporates not only the foundations of science but also the ability to truly engage in science in many hands-on experiences.

My students prefer to "DO" science instead of read about science. And I agree that valuable learning takes place when we "DO" science. My students benefit not only from the intrinsic science skills, but they also engage in valuable social learning. Time seems to fly by as we participate in hands-on activities.

My Project

I can think of a variety of uses for Chromebooks in the classroom. One way that I can envision my students using Chromebooks is virtual field trips. As an alternative school located in a rural area our students don't often get the chance to explore beyond their communities. Using Chromebooks I can take my students on tours of National Parks, Monuments and Museums. In addition we can explore science simulations that we are unable to physically create in our classroom.

Using Chromebooks will allow my students to become proficient in technology, a necessary skill in today's world.

Understanding how to create a variety of documents and presentations will enhance my students' knowledge and confidence in their ability to participate in future interviews, post-secondary educational experiences and other endeavors. Technology skills will be a necessary and required skill for life as we move to a more digital world. My students need the ability to engage in this digital world.

In our school we have just begun to experiment with Google classroom and I am excited by the possibilities this can bring to my own classroom. We can use Chromebooks to engage in real-time surveys and informal quizzes. We can learn how to collect and analyze data from sources such as, National Geographic, NASA, NOAA, as well as local sources. I must admit that my students and I occasionally watch the live cams of Eagles, and Pandas, what better way to teach them to appreciate our world.
