My Students

We are an urban school in Chicago with a very diverse population of students. Our students come from all different cultural and racial backgrounds. Most students come from low-income households and we have a high number of students with special needs in each grade level. Our school culture promotes inclusion for all students and encourages an inquiry based approach to learning for all.

Students are active participants in their learning, conducting investigations and creating projects that reflect the depth of their new understandings.

Coupling an inquiry based approach with an an applied science curriculum, students in my class not only learn scientific concepts, but also learn about the implications of their decisions. Additionally, students are shown how to apply their skills to other content areas in order to ensure their academic success. Woven into the science content and the applications of their science skills, I include connections to support the other content areas; skills such as non-fiction reading, writing, mathematical, and social emotional learning are integrated into the science content.

My Project

We will use the Chromebooks to create a hybrid science journal and to hopefully replace our out-dated textbooks. Currently the student do all of their journaling in a composition notebook. The Chromebooks would afford me the opportunity to help the student improve their note-taking, graphing and presentation skills. With this technology we can extend student learning, by helping them to construct more complex graphs, collaboratively create mind-maps/concept-webs with other students, and to be able to provide more feedback on their note-taking skills. Students who struggle with traditional reading and writing tasks will have accommodations that better meet their learning needs, through the use of this technology.
