My Students

The students I work with are from a rural mill town where business has not been booming lately. Poverty levels are high, and aspirations are low. The students in my classes have emotional, intellectual, and learning disabilities which prevent them from being successful in many regular high school classes.

Most of my students are not fans of school and would rather be in the woods hunting and trapping, or in a garage working on cars.

Some have behavioral concerns that add an extra challenge to my classes. My goal is to show them that not all learning is bad, and it is possible to enjoy reading a book. The students and I have positive relationship built on trust and respect, and there are no other kids I would rather be working with.

My Project

Working with students who are not engaged, struggling to attend school, and dislike reading, make every day a new challenge. Throw in the past couple years of uneven teaching and it's like being a first year teacher.

My goal is to reach all students based on their interests to keep them engaged in school.

If a student shares they are interested in snowmobiling, I can go to Teachers pay Teachers and find reading resources instantly to share with this student. When a kiddo is reading about something they're interested in, they want to do the reading. It also shows that as a teacher I care about them and listen to them.
