This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Walking into our school, you will find a diverse group of kids. Many of my students are English Language Learners, which means they are learning how to read, write, and speak English.

Our classroom is in an urban environment, filled with kids from all walks of life.

We are a Title I school, and our whole school gets free breakfast and lunch. I have a few students with troubled homes, which makes me work harder to create an environment where every child feels safe and able to learn the skills necessary to be ready for middle school and beyond.

My Project

Students are currently being asked to learn in a completely new way because of the coronavirus pandemic. My students have been out of the classroom for over a year and have difficulty maintaining focus. Worse, when students are quarantined, they must return to distance learning for 10 school days. This is extremely difficult as my students are not tech-savvy, and don't have parents who are familiar enough with the grade-level standards to support them.

This means I am looking for creative ways to make the content I present to my students memorable and engaging.

Flocabulary is a digital platform that offers videos my students can watch that will build their background knowledge and help them better understand the content being taught to them. As English Language Learners, it is critical they see content in a way that helps them better understand the academic vocabulary necessary for success with third-grade curriculum standards.
