I teach in a public school self-contained setting with 8 first grade students. They are from diverse backgrounds, African Americans, Caucasian, Asian and Hispanic American, low income to middle class income homes. They all have sensory, social emotional, academic, and behavioral needs. They are extremely creative and enjoy building and designing what they create daily. Children flourish through hands on experiences and playful situations. Due to lack of social and communication skills they typically work independently. Structural small groups are put in place for them to build oral development as well as communication skills. I am thrilled to be able to teach children valuable life skills including turn taking, pretend play, problem solving, and socially communicating with others. These traits are necessary in becoming a good citizen.
All students wants to learn how to read. This reading program will beneficial to students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), because it is researched based to improve the reading of students with special needs. It systematically assesses a child’s skills and overcomes error patterns and difficulties. Most reading programs are gear to general education students. This reading program helps the teacher meet the needs of each individual student. Early literacy is key to all readers. Having a diverse set of books on all reading levels gives students the keys to reading success.
