Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school serves an ethnically diverse student population in San Leandro, CA. Approximately 30% of students are English Language Learners and 72% qualify for free/reduced lunch. Students receive music class once a week in 1st through 5th grade in which they sing, and play xylophone and drums. Starting in fifth grade students may choose another instrument (violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet or trombone).
As the first dual-language bilingual school in the district, this is a place where innovation is happening.
We've launched a bucket drumline ensemble, began guitar instruction for 4th and 5th graders, and this year will bring back the choral program.
My Project
The 4th and 5th graders will get to learn the basics of playing piano on these digital keyboards. As one of the most popular instruments in the world, students are very excited to learn this instrument! Students will learn simple songs as well as basic chords and scales. The 5th graders will do a short performance at the end of the school year for their peers and families.
No matter what instrument they choose to study later, having basic knowledge and skill on the piano will help them become a better musician.
Learning the keyboard will prepare them for middle school as well, where keyboard is now offered.
