Digital Photography!

My students need digital cameras for their Photography class. Digital cameras with the option to change ISO and shutter speed are essential to teaching students about light, timing, and digital manipulation.

My Students

My students come from a Title l school in an impoverished, yet culturally rich neighborhood. Many of them have never experienced an Art class and those that have, had gaps and lapses in their Art education. Yet when they come in and hold a camera, learn a new technique, or create an amazing composition, they are proud of what they've done and leave my class with a smile that lasts all day.

There are 30 students that range in age from 11-14 years old.

Each one of them is unique and comes from different backgrounds. They all come together in our brand new K-8 Community School that was built in order to bring this community together. There hasn't been a school in this neighborhood in many years. Previously these students were bussed to 8 different schools across the county.

My Project

These cameras will enable my students to learn about the fascinating and extremely creative world of Photography. In their neighborhood, the ability to tell stories through digital representation can lend a voice to someone that may struggle with speaking about their situation. I want to teach these students that there are ways of telling their stories and seeing their world other than just writing or drawing or speaking. For some, that is a difficult task. So with photography, they can have another voice and outlet for what may be inside of them. Just like with any visual art, it takes giving them the opportunity to explore and express in order to find what lets loose their voice.
