I work as an Occupational Therapist in 4 Charter Schools in the city of Wilmington and New Castle. My students range from Kindergarteners to high schoolers. Most of my students (80%) come from low income households. Some of my students are participating in the hybrid model and other students are remote virtual learners. The students who receive Occupational Therapy in school are in self-contained, integrated and general ed classrooms. Generally, the students that I work with have a wide range of abilities including intellectual, learning disabled, down syndrome and specific learning disabilities. Since the Spring of 2020, we have been creative with therapy due to Covid. Virtually we have been using household items such as chip bag clips to work on fine motor skills or coloring different paper and hanging on the wall to work on motor planning or left/right discrimination. My students are always so excited to see what where our therapy sessions will take us.
The Coronavirus pandemic has presented us with many challenges. One of these challenges is finding new and different ways to work with kids outside of the traditional in person routines we were used too. The good news is there are lots of resources out there to help. In addition to hands on activities, my students would benefit from digital resources. I have purchased many products such as google slides from teacher pay teacher with great success.
My students would benefit from amazing interactive materials that are both digital and in print such as those resources found on teachers pay teachers and the use of drawing tablets with a stylus.
This will help engage my students and families at home and at school! These resources will help me to work on fine motor skills, eye hand coordination skills, visual spatial skills in an interactive safe and sanitary way. The drawing tablets with a stylus can also be used by some of students during math class where they need to show proof of work and struggle to use the chromebook mousepad to write numbers and words.
