Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What would a math classroom be like if students showed as much interest in the quadratic formula as they do in the latest technological gadgets? I teach 11th grade math in a high-needs urban school with students who have typically become detached from learning math.
Often I find that students are interested in the relationship between technology and math, and I include multimedia into my math lessons as often as I can. Unfortunately, our school does not have the resources to provide cameras to classrooms, and students miss out on the hands-on experience.
With a digital camcorder in my classroom, I would be able to lead multimedia explorations into the parabolic path of a basketball, comparison of constant and accelerating velocity, and projects where students examine the math in the world around them. Students will be hooked into a way of learning math that is both relevant and fun.
Your help will bring a new dimension into my math classroom. They will have a new tool to be able to capture the mathematics around them---and they might just catch the math bug along the way.
