Indra Nooyi, CEO of Pepsi, recently held a podcast about the importance of trained in science as a youth. She stated, "if you stay with the STEM disciplines, you can learn pretty much all of the subjects as you move along in life. And your scientific disciplines play a very important role, and ground you very well as you move into positions of higher and higher authority, whatever the job is."
Having taught middle school for almost ten years now, one thing I have learned is that ALL students are innately curious and crave exploration and making discoveries.
The more we are able to supply our students with those opportunities to do just that, they will continue to feed those curiosities and accomplish brilliant things in their future.
My Project
Many of my students have never used microscopes before, yet our standards ask them to be able to manipulate them in an effective way to observe and collect data. These digital microscopes are more user friendly for those new to the issue of finding your specimen. The color screen allows for students to easily see the organelles that are within a cell, or the live bacteria floating around in a cheek specimen. If a student is still struggling, or a student finds something really cool and wants to share, the microscopes can easily be connected to my computer which will display the image on the ActiveBoard for all to see. Students may also save and download the images so that they can compare and contrast specimens, or print out their images to display on a project board to better support their claim.
