This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We want to explore the insects! We want to explore the flowers! We want to be real scientists using real equipment. We need some help obtaining microscopes to help us become real scientists.

My second grade students attend a school in a low income area in California.

All students receive free breakfast and lunch. Some students can walk to the local library, but most parents do not have cars to drive them to neighboring libraries. If the local library is accessible, most do not have the most current technology available. There are seventy five kids in second grade who love to learn. Many are gifted and are constantly asking questions and wanting to gain new knowledge. Their inquisitive nature makes them excellent learners and students.

My Project

My school is a project based learning school. We incorporate interdisciplinary projects into our daily curriculum. Second grade students will be working on a science project in the fall answering the following questions; How does the disappearance of honey bees affect me, my town, and local bee keepers? What can I do to help? Students will explore the reproduction of flowers and insects as well as their different parts. In order to fully engage in this project students need digital microscopes to help them see the different parts of the flowers and insects. Having digital microscopes will allow them to be "real scientists" and meet the goals of this science project.

In addition to gaining science content, this kind of technology also allows students to compete in our ever-growing technological world.

Once our students reach high school and college they will be asked to manipulate technology in order to be successful. Introducing digital microscopes to my students now increases their chances of becoming successful individuals who are competitive in the current job market.
