Digital Meets Traditional in a 4th Grade Bilingual Class
Help me give my students styluses to write on their iPads to help achieve my goal of a paperless classroom while also providing them with engaging books in English and Spanish to develop their bilingualism.
Last year, I was moved to fourth grade from first grade. Many of the materials that I had accumulated over the years for first grade were suddenly not appropriate for my students.
My students are dual language students which means that half of them speak Spanish at home and the other half speak English at home.
Since I was a first grade teacher, I know most of my students already. They're amazing kids with a lot of different interests and learning needs.
Together we are learning to speak each others' languages and learning about each others' cultures. It's really hard, but we have a lot of fun and try our best and remember to laugh when we make mistakes. Most of all, we follow our one classroom rule: GROW YOUR BRAIN!
My Project
My students are learning how to develop skills necessary for the 21st century. To do that they need the tools that are part of the their future work environments. In my class, each student has their own iPad, and we try to be as paperless as possible. Writing with our fingers on a screen can be difficult, though.
These Logitech Crayons are styluses that have been tested by my students and they make writing on the iPad so much easier!
They're also a fraction of the price of the Apple Pencil, and they're flat, so they won't roll away. My goal for the coming school year, especially with how we've been forced teach virtually this year, is to become completely paperless. To do that, having an easy way to write on the iPads is essential.
Despite wanting to go completely paperless, books are something that will never go out of style. My students love reading the English books in my classroom because I have 2 copies of many of the books. This allows the students to read their books along with a friend, so they can talk about the book as they're reading. My Spanish books, though, are another story. Many students have expressed frustration at the lack of quality and interest in the Spanish book selection in my classroom. The books that I've requested are highly engaging, and I've again asked for 2 copies of each book for students to enjoy with a partner.
