This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Man, I want to be in your class!" is a common reaction I hear when I tell people about what my middle school students do every day. I teach DIgital Media, with an emphasis on filmmaking as part of a revitalized STEM program in NE Illinois. When I first began designing the curriculum, some well meaning but misguided colleagues said to me "These kids are not going to be able to do everything you want them to." Challenge accepted.

Each day of filming I remind my students, "You are professionals," and they meet my expectations every time.

In a school that is about as culturally diverse as you can get, with almost 80% of our students being a minority and almost 50% low income, each student brings something unique to the visual storytelling process. So many of my students would never get an opportunity to make films on their own. With clear goals and expectations, as well as spending time teaching my students about what it means to be "professional," my students consistently rise to my very high expectations. The best part is watching those students that people have given up on THRIVE.

My Project

I am requesting 3 sets of high quality Rode shotgun microphones, boom poles and a classroom set of 20 headphones for audio monitoring. High quality audio is essential to high quality video. Being able to capture and monitor audio is crucial and an essential part of the filmmaking experience.

Rode is well known for their audio quality, and my students deserve to use high quality equipment for their films.

These microphone and boom pole sets as well as quality headphones will not only help my students record and monitor high quality audio, but they will also help my students feel more immersed in the filmmaking experience.
