This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our PreK Spanish Dual-Language class enables children to learn Spanish and English in a safe and inclusive environment. Students' home languages and cultures are respected while preparing the children to move into the bilingual elementary school program. Our students also have time daily to interact with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the other PreK class on our campus.
Our students are creative, innovative, curious, and thoughtful.
They care about each other and they are eager to learn and explore. They thrive on new experiences and find joy in learning new information about the world around them, each other, and themselves. We want to give them every opportunity to show what they know and to express themselves.
To qualify for our program, family income must be below a certain threshold based on family size. Almost all students come from immigrant families, some having arrived within the last year, and some are homeless--living in shelters or temporary situations. The pandemic has been very difficult for many of these families, so we are trying especially hard to give these children chances to be active and have joyful childhood experiences, while also keeping safety at the forefront.
My Project
We have had a classroom iPad and we use it for showing videos, playing music, and looking up information with the children. However, we recently started to use a handwriting app which allows students to practice writing letters, numbers, and words (their favorite thing to write is their names!) using a stylus. We've historically had a pretty low-tech class (and the students already have many opportunities to write throughout the day), but we quickly realized how helpful this app has been for encouraging students who struggle with fine motor activities and generally do not choose to use the writing area unless given a specific task. I then went on a quest to discover more educational apps to teach math, literacy, and social-emotional skills. In addition, we have not had a functional listening center for a few years, so we had been considering buying new supplies to be able to offer that to the students. However, we've found a few apps and websites that will read books to children and allow them to follow along.
We want to create an iPad "center" in our classroom.
We have requested three iPads and 3 child-friendly cases. This will allow students to learn and practice digital literacy skills, which are becoming more and more relevant, as well as regular literacy, math, and social emotional skills. We will teach the children to access different apps, or we will choose specific apps that will be available for specific days. Engaging with these apps and websites will allow students to interact with content in ways that reinforce what they are learning and doing in other classroom areas.
