Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember vinyl records or 45s? How about 8 track players and cassette tapes? The student's in my 2nd grade class certainly don't! Yet, the best I can offer them for independent listening are cassette tapes and players. These are vintage pieces of equipment for today's digital learners!
My students are bright, inquisitive children who come to school with some serious disadvantages.
They reside and attend school in a large, urban area plagued with poverty, drugs and gangs. Most of them know English as a second language. Many of them do not have their own books at home or parents who are able to read to them on a regular basis. Yet, they come to school wanting to learn and loving it when their teacher reads aloud to them. They can forget all their problems for a moment as they travel to another time and place that only a story can take them. Listening to stories being read is important to their growth and development as readers. Hearing stories being read improves their fluency. It engages them and they love it! As their teacher, I know it is important to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to listen to reading. Over the years, I have personally acquired many books which have been recorded on cassette tapes.
My Project
As part of our literacy block, students have a time each day that they can Independently listen to stories on tape. Even after much explicit instruction and practice they still have a very difficult time using and operating the tape players. They forget which direction the tape goes, or the tape is broken or the the player may need new batteries. They must come to me (while I am working with a small group or individual) for help or ask one of their peers. Often by the time the problem is solved, their listening time is over. Imagine the frustration and disappointment! Using an mp3 player would be much simpler and much more familiar to today's students. Their time would be spent listening to and enjoying reading! The players are small, easily stored and easily recharged. They have the capacity to hold many recordings making it even easier for students to listen to more reading.
Your donation toward the purchase of mp3 players for my classroom is important.
These would give my students access to today's technology used for their learning. Research has proved that listening to fluent reading will improve a student's own fluency. Not only that, it begins an enjoyable habit which hopefully will become lifelong. I would love to learn that my students will listen to audiobooks as they make the trip to the university as a young adult. Wouldn't that be great?
