"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." -Nelson Mandela
A typical day in my classroom can be challenging when my students lack basic needs such as pencils and sharpeners.
I would like to provide my students with the materials that they need to be successful.
My school is a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch. My students live in an inner city school where basic needs are difficult to meet, and, therefore, they cannot always focus on learning to the best of their ability. As a class, we need so much and need to let our creative juices flow.
Although we might not come in with a lot of background, my students have a love of learning, and learn best when they are presented with material in multiple ways. I feel that it is important to give them access to different resources and activities to help to meet their individual needs. Many of my students have challenges such as learning disabilities, lack of English proficiency, or being hearing and visually impaired. Assignments have to be more specialized in order to meet their needs.
Children learn by playing games. Educators sometimes forget that as they grow older, children can still learn and apply the skills they have learned by playing games. And students often forget that while education is not always about fun and games, they can still have fun while learning.
Games such as Monopoly, Payday, Life, and Daytrader will help students to practice the digital literacy skills they are learning from the books they are reading.
They will be successful in the games to the extent that they earn, save, and invest their money wisely. These are very practical skills that every student needs to know, and students will have fun as they learn.
