Children learn more with visual/auditory interaction, rather than just watching television shows. We have DVDs that require TVs and a DVD player to use. Due to a shortage of funding, my ability to create a more technology-involved learning center such as the one I am requesting is hindered.
I teach a class of 21 eager, smart, and mature kindergartners in central Indiana who are transitioning into first grade.
They attend a wonderful school that puts great pride in adhering to diversity, diverse learning styles, and differentiated learning. Our school, students, and neighborhood are in the High-Poverty area.
My students become more and more eager to learn as much as their brains will take in. They LOVE any kind of video interaction that requires them to repeat letter sounds, or sing along. They also respond well to song, dance, and any kind of auditory learning.
My Project
Since early in the school year, I have tried to create very engaging, dynamic learning centers. The results have been phenomenal. My students have learned to program headphones so that they can listen to the "story of the week" on headphones (as an independent center) and they use Waterford learning computers to learn letters, letter sounds, phonemic awareness, and basic reading skills. I'm requesting these televisions, along with DVD players, so that the students can use headphones to interact with several Leap Frog learning DVDs I have. This way, 2-3 students could sit at a television, and follow along with the DVD, singing, reading, or speaking letter sounds aloud. This would create yet another technology-based learning activity, a unique one that would be sure to excite and engage the children, as well as adhere to all learning styles.
In a technologically advancing era, it is vital to teach young students how to operate technology, other than computers, and to learn how they can be used for learning and fun at the same time!
Your donation would provide a unique, dynamic learning center which would give my students, who already LOVE learning stations, yet another center to make them EXCITED about learning, and even in another learning style! They will interact and learn visually, auditory, and vocally.
