Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are high school students embarking on their first Engineering experience. They are enrolled in an Engineering Essentials course. They will be exploring several aspects of Engineering, Design and Modeling using CAD is one of the Modules. Our school is a PLTW (Project Lead The Way) school. PLTW is an Activity Project-Based curriculum that will allow my students to explore various STEM career pathways, by working on projects.
Help my Engineering Students see and learn about this career pathway through hands-on projects and explore the vast opportunities STEM careers offer.
Our school is an exceptional 7-12 grade public charter school. Our students come to us from all walks of life: free and reduced-price lunch, English Language Learners, special education needs, and gifted student population.
As the pandemic has forced us to teach remotely, my students crave the hands on inquiry based learning they were so used to. As I am looking for alternatives to keep students engaged in hands-on activities, individual kits, seem to be the way to go for now.
My Project
As a female Robotics and Career Technical Education teacher, it has always been my goal to encourage girls to explore STEM careers. The IF/THEN has been so inspiring for me as an educator and advocate for Girls in STEM.
As we continue in a distance learning mode, the IF/THEN Collection will serve as a perfect segue to my Digital Electronics module.
I found several inspiring videos of women in STEM, in the IF/THEM Collection. These short, bite-sized video clips embody the essence of my career exploration curriculum. Students will work collaboratively to identify and present the STEM journey some of these successful women have taken. They will then create posters that we will share school-wide, inspiring students school-wide to explore STEM career pathways.
The Arduino Kit will allow my Engineering students to explore various aspects of breadboarding and digital electronics. It includes sensors - Ultrasonic, Temperature & Humidity, as well as use motors, Buzzers, LEDs, which lends itself to several projects. The Arduino IDE Starter kits will enable my students to work on hands-on projects, learning about electrical circuits, using a Tinkercad simulator, and guide videos.
As all the students will have the same kit, they can still collaborate virtually, or in small groups when we move to a hybrid model, to brainstorm and problem solve. Having 1:1 kits available will allow my students to work in a safe and healthy environment, and still have the advantage of learning through doing.
I hope to keep my students engaged and curious through this difficult virtual learning experience.
